The vantage of Woodbury University School of Architecture (San Diego), situated at the most southwest corner of the United States, is sensitive to changes within the ecologies and economies of contested territories that implicate architectural shifts at a trans-national scale. The specific campus setting within the transitional Barrio Logan community already has enabled an embedding with issues drawn from the problematics of the military industry, of distressed environments, and of socio-spatial and political struggles – all scenarios begging for conscientious design consideration and projection. This unique context gives students the opportunity to study architecture as both an individually and communally transformative experience.
The intimate scale of the offerings of the south campus gives students a familiar and strong connection with faculty creating an unparalleled learning environment. Students are extended a holistic educational experience through the craft-based, hands-on influences of the instructional population – a small but diverse group of academics and practitioners freely lending the perspectives of their various backgrounds, professional experiences, and research interests and methodologies. Growing out of the Woodbury University (San Diego) experience, then, alumni are proving agile and entrepreneurial, carving new modes of operation into the discipline of architecture that are suggestive of the leadership potential inherent to their shared background.
