IA BFA Ranked Top 5 for 2014

This Fall, we received a prestigious “Top Interior Design Schools in the West” ranking by DesignIntelligence.

 “This ranking by DesignIntelligence acknowledges the effort that has been invested in building this program over the years,” said Norman Millar, AIA, Dean of the School of Architecture.  “Both within the School of Architecture and among programs at other institutions, Woodbury’s Interior Architecture program is recognized as a design and pedagogical leader.”

 DesignIntelligence is the Design Futures Council’s bi-monthly report on the future, delivering original research, insightful commentary, and instructive best practices. According to its website (www.di.net), design leaders rely on DesignIntelligence to deliver insight about emerging trends and management practices, allowing them to make their organization a better-managed, more financially successful enterprise.

 “The Design Intelligence ranking is an important measure of how professionals perceive the value of the graduates of particular schools,” said Ingalil Wahlroos-Ritter, AIA, Associate Dean of the School of Architecture. “The Interior Architecture program at Woodbury offers students an outstanding education that elevates and reinvents the discipline and cultivates students who are both prepared for the profession and also seek to re-imagine the realms of design.”

 At Woodbury, students are provided with the analytical, design, and technical skills necessary for success in the interior design professions.  Coursework combines hands-on training in visual arts, product design, furniture design, and architecture with social science research and studies in the humanities.  Using three-dimensional models, computer rendering and drawing, students explore the various Interior Architecture disciplines.  Studio and seminar courses enable them to gain the expertise needed to master the essential elements of interior design: form, color, lighting, finishes and furnishings.

Training in building technology, material science, and behavioral factors provides the skills to create spatial compositions.  In a field of rapidly changing technology and ideas, students are provided with the professional and intellectual tools to negotiate this discipline through design and cultural awareness.  Instruction is provided by both established and emerging voices in design education and practice, including professional designers and educators from outside the department.

“This ranking is an affirmation from the professional design community of our approach to Interior Architecture as an act of craft and of critical inquiry,” said Kristin King, Chair of the Department of Interior Architecture at Woodbury. “That’s how we teach our students, and that is why our undergraduate program consistently produces not only designers, but design leaders.  We see the graduate program as a logical extension of our efforts to develop the theory and practice of Interior Architecture.”
