An introduction to the software and hardware behind digital fabrication strategies. In this workshop you’ll learn the basics of rapid prototyping and the best practices for the translation of digital work (Illustrator and Rhino files) to digitally-fabricated physical models and objects using the laser cutter, CNC mill, and 3D printer.

Learn the principles of Building Information Modeling (BIM) from the practical to the conceptual.  Engage with professional practice and understand BIM’s design potential as you acquire the skills of the software package that is becoming a vital professional tool for comprehensive building design.

Whether your goal is employment, graduate school, or the compilation of a body of work, this workshop will help you develop a portfolio that displays a high level of professionalism through its text and well-curated images. Learn how to extract effective “work samples” from the larger portfolio for job applications. Master the basics of layout using InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, to produce an electronic as well as a print portfolio of your work. The ultimate goal is to create a unified work from unrelated projects, reflecting the vision and skill of their common author.

Light Focus: Design Build

Schedule: MTWThF, 6 hours per day, July 7 – August 1
Fee: $3,000

In this intensive four-week design-build course, participants will engage in a hands-on process of designing and then building a full-scale shade structure in the immediate vicinity of Woodbury University/Barrio Logan. This process-driven studio experience, introduces students to various modes and methods of fabrication. Prior to final fabrication and installation the course will also introduce students to the processes of:

-Testing project specific material applications
-Establishing program and manage budget
-Prototyping design proposals
-The production of design specific document – drawings
-Scheduling work, constructing the project
-Organizing/host opening event of completed project

 Each phase is explored as a means of aligning the project’s design intent with the ‘real’ limits of material, program and site. Supplemental lectures, field trips and workshops will focus on examples of processes from related design and fabrication industries.

This course is open to students seeking to earn 3-unit studio credit and/or anyone with enthusiasm about design-build and capturing light.

AIA Continuing Education System Learning Units Available
